Every few days FAR gets another call from a family with a child with autism. Some of the families have been referred to us by service providers, some by friends, others by doctors or state agencies. Some families found us on the web or at a resource fair. Everyone has the same question really; what can I do to help my child? A number of families already know about Applied Behavior Analysis therapy (ABA) and want to find out how they can get it, others just want to know what services are out there. We all need a hand at sometime.
FAR sorts through the questions and points everyone in the right direction so they can get the answers they are looking for. We know that other autism groups have great networks and supports and want to be sure families are making use of such sources as Indiana Autism Society, Answers for Autism, Autism Speaks etc.
Many of the families that call want to apply for financial help to get their child to resources and ABA services. This is what FAR does. We connect families with children on the spectrum to resources they otherwise could not afford. The first step is to have a conversation and see if we, the family and FAR, thinks they would be a good match. The next step is to send them an application and then provide assistance as needed to get it completed. If a family isn't a good match we offer suggestions for other resources and information. If they meet the qualifications for FAR we have them contact one of the providers in the FAR Service Provider Network.
All the while FAR is working to continue to raise funds so that we can support more families by providing subsidies for therapy so that every child has a chance at getting the therapy they need. We recently held out annual event Tapas Wine & Jazz to raise money, we are grateful to Indiana Toy & Comic Expo in Bloomington on August 30 for donating part of every admission to FAR, as well as some of the vendors. And we've just stared a new on line campaign; One more Family, One more child http://dm2.gofund.me/gq2pw4fw and we continuously raise money through Spongefund http://fundsponge.com/groups/FAR_Foundation_for_Autism_Resources
